The Mid-Line Pencil Collection: Graphite Writing Instruments
Intricately detailed, functional art objects formed in graphite. Four years ago I discovered this fine artist at the national American Craft Council show. Holding the Classic Frog Tree in my hand, I was amazed at how functional this beautiful writing instrument was. What a classy, affordable idea this sculpture was - about 7" in length. Then, two years ago the artist created a new, smaller graphite instrument which was not only even more affordable, but it accommodated smaller hands, as well. tThis new mid-sized pencil
The Sculptor makes these unusual implements that are equally an object of art and a functional drawing/writing tool which can grace a desk, be an object of interest on a pedestal or be the only pencil near the phone that is always on the ready (never in a drawer).
Each Graphite Object is meticulously hand-crafted in his San Francisco studio using old and new world techniques. Most of these unusual, functional art objects are limited editons, with pieces being retired on a regualr basis.
First, he carves an original design in clay. With intense pressure, carbonaceous graphite (same material in pencils) and smudge-resistant compounds are fused into a reproducible form using a proprietary technique that Batle invented. Finally using delicate carving and traditional finishing techniques, the Graphite Object is completed.
All their surfaces can draw and the graphite will resist smudging onto your hand. With daily use these Graphite Objects should last 5 to 7 years.
Perfect for gift giving, each Graphite Object is beautifully packaged with signed literature and a custom box. The original design(s), the writing instruments of the The Mid-Line Collection, are approximately 5 1/2" in length.
